Escalante Petified State Park - May 2004

The evening before our hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument we spent the late afternoon setting up camp in Petrified State Park.  This state park gets its name from the large deposits of petrified wood that are found there.  A short 5 mile round-trip trail winds past numerous large and multi-colored pieces of petrified wood.  Several of the images below were taken with the late afternoon sun setting to the west, while others were taken that night and early the next morning.
